The Gallitzin Tunnels Park & Museum are located roughly midway between Altoona and Johnstown on US Route 22.
Railroad buffs have identified the Gallitzin Tunnels as a "must" stopover. It offers to the visitor a glimpse of the fascinating railroad "past and present." Trains run through the tunnels 24 hours a day and are part of Norfolk Southern's main line through Pennsylvania. While visiting the tunnels, stop by the Visitors Center located in the Museum / Theatre.

The Frank & Sylvia Pasquerilla Heritage Discovery Center, part of the Johnstown Discovery Network, is a community center that contains several attractions: the "America: Through Immigrant Eyes" exhibit; the Johnstown Children's Museum; the Iron & Steel Gallery; and two additional galleries. It also houses the Galliker's Cafe and the 4th Floor Ethnic Social Club. The HDC is operated by the Johnstown Area Heritage Association

The great Johnstown Flood happened on
May 31, 1889
when 20 million tons of water from a broken dam on Lake Conemaugh
flooded the area after a heavy rain, killing 2,209 people.
(Johnstown was also flooded in 1936 and 1977.) |
